چکیده

The Discrete Element Method (DEM) is attracting increasing interest for the simulation of industrial granular flows. While the majority of previous DEM modelling has considered two-dimensional flows, we present here a series of three-dimensional simulations for a number of important industrial applications. The charge motion in a 5 m diameter ball mill and in a Hicom nutating mill, discharge from singleand four-port cylindrical hoppers, and particle size separation by a vibrating screen are considered. For each case, realistic particle size distributions have been used. The results obtained indicate that DEM modelling is now sufficiently advanced that it can make useful contributions to process optimisation and equipment design.

A new constitutive law for dense granular flows

In many geophysical or industrial applications involving flows of grains, a continuum description would be of considerable help, for example in predicting natural hazards or in designing industrial processes. However, constitutive equations for dry granular flows are still matter of debates 1-10. One difficulty is that grains can behave like a solid (in a sand pile), a liquid (when poured from ...

Shock waves, dead zones and particle-free regions in rapid granular free-surface flows

Shock waves, dead zones and particle-free regions form when a thin surface avalanche of granular material flows around an obstacle or over a change in the bed topography. Understanding and modelling these flows is of considerable practical interest for industrial processes, as well as for the design of defences to protect buildings, structures and people from snow avalanches, debris flows and r...

Granular and Particle-Laden Flows

This research programme at the Newton Institute was devoted to improving the understanding and mathematical modelling of granular and particle-laden fluid systems as they arise in nature, in the laboratory and in industry. Geophysical examples of granular and particle-laden flows include rock avalanches, debris flows, mud flows and turbulent boundary layers with suspended particles, such as vol...

Three-dimensional characteristic approach for incompressible thermo-flows and influence of artificial compressibility parameter

In this paper the characteristics of unsteady three-dimensional incompressible flows with heat transfer are obtained along with artificial compressibility of Chorin. At first, compatibility equations and pseudo characteristics for three-dimensional flows are derived from five governing equations (continuity equation, Momentum equations in three directions, and energy equation) and then results ...

Numerical Simulation of Granular Column Collapses with Pressure-Dependent Viscoplastic Model using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic Method

This paper presents a numerical analysis of granular column collapse phenomenon using a two-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics model and a local constitutive law proposed by Jop et al. This constitutive law, which is based on the viscoplastic behaviour of dense granular material flows, is characterized by an apparent viscosity depending both on the local strain rate and the local press...
